Winter Teat Care in Cold Climates: Preventing Chapping and Cracking

Dairy cattle in cold climates — including the northern zones of Uzbekistan, the highland regions of Azerbaijan, and the continental inland areas of other AgroLyne target markets — experience teat skin challenges during winter months that are as significant as the heat stress challenges of summer, though very different in nature.
Cold, dry air causes teat skin to lose moisture and elasticity. Combined with the repeated wetting and drying from milking twice daily, teats in cold weather can develop:
- Chapped, cracked skin on the teat barrel and around the teat orifice
- Loss of the skin's natural barrier function
- Micro-cracks in the teat orifice area that provide entry points for mastitis bacteria
- Increased susceptibility to teat canal infection during the post-milking open-canal period
Why Cracked Teat Skin Increases Mastitis Risk
The skin of the teat end is the first physical line of defense against bacterial entry. An intact, healthy teat skin is a relatively poor bacterial colonization surface. Cracked, chapped skin is porous, has increased surface area for bacterial adherence, and allows bacteria to persist in skin fissures between milkings — including during the post-milking period when the teat canal is open.
A herd with significant teat chapping in winter will typically show a SCC rise during the cold months even with the same milking hygiene program that kept SCC low in autumn. This is the teat condition effect on mastitis susceptibility, independent of bacterial pressure.
Selecting a Winter Teat Dip
For cold-climate winter conditions, teat dip emollient content moves from a "nice to have" to a critical selection criterion:
Emollient-rich formulas: Vilnus LA includes skin conditioning additives that help maintain teat skin moisture and flexibility through the cold season. For pre-milking use, lactic acid-based formulas with emollient support are particularly suited to winter teat care.
Reduced concentration consideration: some farms reduce to 3,000 ppm iodine (Vilnus 3000 Active) in winter — the lower iodine load is less drying than 5,000 ppm, which matters for teat skin condition when winter chapping is the primary risk factor. This works in herds where contagious mastitis pressure is low enough to allow the lower-concentration product.
