Quaternary Ammonium Chemistry in Pre-Milking Dips

Vilnus QA uses a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) as its primary active ingredient. QACs are cationic surfactants with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and good residual effect on surfaces. In pre-milking teat dip applications, the residual action of QACs means the active ingredient remains on the teat skin surface longer than acids alone, providing continued antimicrobial protection through the lag phase between application and unit attachment.

QACs are non-corrosive to equipment, stable across a wide temperature range, and generally well-tolerated on teat skin when used at correct concentrations.

Robotic Milking Compatibility

Vilnus QA is formulated for compatibility with automated milking systems. Robotic milking presents specific challenges for teat disinfection: the pre-dip is typically applied by an automated sprayer arm within the robot, teat condition varies widely between visits, and contamination management is continuous rather than batch-based.

Products used in robotic milking must not foam excessively (which interferes with sensors and pneumatics), must remain effective at variable ambient temperatures, and must work within the short dip-to-cup contact times typical of robotic units (often 15-30 seconds). Vilnus QA meets these operational requirements.

For post-milking in robotic systems, Vilnus LA DP RBT and Vilnus F100 AC RBT are the corresponding post-milking formulations designed for automated application. Milking circuit cleaning in robotic systems is handled by Capuluna CLEAN RBT.

Conventional Parlor Use

In conventional milking parlors, Vilnus QA can be applied by foam gun, spray, or dip cup. The choice depends on herd size and labor availability. Foam application using equipment like the Ambic Multi Foamer Plus is faster for large herds, while dip cup application with a Twin Dip Cup and Mini Dipper is suitable for smaller operations.

When to Choose Vilnus QA

Vilnus QA is the preferred pre-milking product when:

• The operation uses robotic or automated milking
• A residual-effect QAC formulation is preferred over acid-based pre-dips
• The farm has previously experienced issues with foam-based products interfering with automated equipment

For acid-based pre-milking formulations, Vilnus LA and Vilnus LACO are the lactic acid alternatives.
