Teat Preparation Timing: How Long Before Milking Should You Dip and Wipe?
The Timing Question in Pre-Milking Preparation
Pre-milking teat preparation serves two purposes: it reduces the bacterial load on the teat surface before cluster attachment, and it provides the tactile stimulation that initiates the oxytocin release needed for milk letdown. The timing of these steps — how long after dipping you attach the cluster — affects both functions.
Minimum Contact Time for Pre-Milking Dips
Pre-milking disinfectant products require a minimum contact time on the teat skin to achieve meaningful bacterial kill. The active ingredient in the product — lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, iodine at low concentration, or other sanitizer — needs time to act on the bacteria present on the teat surface.
Standard minimum contact time: 30 seconds
For most pre-milking products, including Vilnus LACO and Vilnus LA, a minimum of 30 seconds of wet contact time before wiping is the standard protocol. This means:
- Apply pre-dip to all 4 teats (approximately 15 seconds for the preparation motion itself)
- Allow the product to remain wet on the teat surface for 30 seconds
- Wipe dry with an individual towel per cow
- Attach the cluster
In practice, if the farm milks with a pre-dip, forestrips, and then attaches — the total time between initial dipping and attachment is typically 45–90 seconds in a well-paced parlor routine. This comfortably exceeds the minimum contact time.
Where Timing Failures Occur in Practice
Rushing the wipe: the most common failure is wiping immediately after application — before 30 seconds have elapsed. If the milker is moving quickly through a large parlor stall, the lag between application and wipe can be under 15 seconds. The product is removed before adequate contact time, and the bacterial reduction is significantly lower.
Pre-dipping and immediately attaching without wiping: some operations apply a pre-dip product and attach the cluster without a wipe step. This carries residual product and diluted bacteria directly into the milking unit and ultimately into the milk. Pre-dip must always be wiped off before unit attachment.
Foam Products and Contact Time
Vilnus Foam and similar foam format pre-dips stay on the teat surface longer than liquid dips because the foam does not run off as quickly. This can be beneficial in high-speed parlors where the time available between application and cluster attachment is short — the product remains in contact rather than draining off the teat.
Vilnus QA (quaternary ammonium-based) is effective in pre-milking application where a non-iodine preparation product is preferred.
The Stimulation Timing Overlap
The 30-second contact time for the pre-dip product overlaps with the stimulation period needed to achieve adequate milk letdown. The wipe step itself provides a significant portion of the stimulation needed. This is why combining the pre-dip/wipe routine with forestripping (to detect and exclude abnormal milk) and the wipe creates a routine that is both hygienically effective and physiologically adequate for milk letdown — without requiring additional time beyond what the hygiene protocol already needs.
