Teat End Scoring: Why It Matters for Mastitis Risk and Product Selection
What Is Teat End Scoring?
Teat end scoring is a structured visual assessment of the condition of the teat end — the most important barrier against bacterial entry into the mammary gland. The teat end is scored on a 4-point scale based on the condition of the teat canal orifice and the surrounding skin:
- Score 1: smooth, round teat orifice, no roughness or callosity — optimal condition
- Score 2: smooth orifice with a slight ring of callosity — mild change, acceptable
- Score 3: raised, rough callosity ring around the orifice — moderate condition change, increased infection risk
- Score 4: very rough, cracked, or ulcerated callosity, or teat end eversion — significant condition change, high infection risk
Why Teat End Condition Matters
The teat canal sphincter muscle physically closes the teat orifice between milkings. A healthy teat end with an intact smooth orifice provides the best physical barrier against ascending bacterial infection. Rough callosity — caused by overmilking, liner overpressure, or prolonged vacuum — increases the teat end's surface area and micro-cracks where bacteria can colonize and from which they can more easily enter the teat canal.
Herds with a high proportion of cows at teat end scores 3 and 4 have higher mastitis incidence than herds with good teat end condition. Teat end scoring is therefore a useful herd-level diagnostic tool and a trigger for investigating milking machine settings and teat preparation protocols.
Responding to Poor Teat End Scores
When a herd survey reveals elevated proportions of score 3 or 4 teat ends, the response has two components:
Equipment review: check liner condition and age, milking vacuum levels, pulsation ratios, and overmilking time. Many teat end condition problems originate in equipment settings rather than hygiene products.
Hygiene product adjustment: Post-milking teat dips with higher emollient (conditioning) content help maintain and recover teat skin integrity.
