Why Mastitis Peaks in Summer
Dairy operations in hot climates consistently see their highest mastitis incidence, highest somatic cell counts, and most significant milk quality problems during the warmest months of the year. This pattern is not coincidental — heat stress directly impairs the mechanisms by which dairy cows resist mammary infection.
Immune suppression: heat stress reduces both the number and activity of white blood cells available to fight infection in the mammary gland. The cow's immune resources are directed toward thermoregulation, leaving less capacity for fighting bacterial challenge at the teat end.
Bacterial growth rate: bacteria multiply faster in warm conditions.
