Subclinical Mastitis: The Hidden Cost in the Bulk Tank

Subclinical vs Clinical Mastitis

Clinical mastitis is visible. The cow shows obvious signs: a swollen, hot, painful quarter; abnormal milk (flakes, clots, watery appearance); and sometimes systemic signs of illness. Clinical cases require immediate action and are easy to count.

Subclinical mastitis is invisible. The cow looks normal, the milk looks normal, milking proceeds normally — but bacteria are present in the mammary gland and the immune system is responding. The quarter is producing less milk than it would at the same lactation stage without infection, the somatic cell count is elevated, and the milk quality is reduced. None of this is apparent without testing.

Why Subclinical Mastitis Is the Larger Problem

In most dairy herds, subclinical mastitis is far more prevalent than clinical mastitis. For every clinical case, there are typically 15–40 subclinically infected cow-quarters in the herd. The cumulative production loss from subclinical infections — each quarter producing 5–15% less milk than its uninfected potential — exceeds the loss from clinical cases in the average herd.

Subclinical infections also act as the reservoir from which contagious mastitis spreads. Staphylococcus aureus subclinical infections can persist in a quarter through multiple lactations, transmitting to new heifers at each milking through cluster contact. This is why a herd with high apparent SCC but few obvious clinical cases often has a significant S. aureus reservoir.

Detection Methods

Bulk tank SCC: the easiest monitoring tool. A consistently high bulk tank SCC signals a subclinical problem in the herd.

California Mastitis Test (CMT): a rapid quarter-level test done at the parlor. The CMT gel reaction indicates the approximate somatic cell level in the quarter. All commercial dairy farms should perform regular CMT screening on the herd to identify subclinical infections.

Individual cow SCC from herd recording: milk recording systems that measure individual cow SCC on a monthly basis are the gold standard for subclinical mastitis detection, identifying which cows are chronically infected and driving herd-level SCC.

Prevention Through Hygiene
