Mastitis in Dairy Sheep and Goats: Detection, Pathogens, and Prevention
Mastitis in Small Ruminants Is Not the Same as Cattle Mastitis
Dairy sheep and goats are significant in AgroLyne target markets — Algerian and Tunisian sheep dairies, Iraqi and Azerbaijani goat operations, and Uzbek karakul milk producers. Mastitis in these species is a major cause of production loss, but its presentation, pathogens, and detection differ meaningfully from cattle mastitis.
Subclinical Mastitis Is Harder to Detect in Sheep
In cattle, subclinical mastitis is detected primarily through somatic cell count (SCC) in bulk tank milk or individual cow milk. In sheep and goats, the interpretation is different:
- Baseline SCC is naturally higher in sheep and goats than in cattle. A healthy dairy cow has a somatic cell count below 200,000 cells/mL. Healthy sheep may have SCC of 200,000–400,000 cells/mL, and healthy goats 500,000–1,000,000 cells/mL, depending on stage of lactation and parity. Using cattle thresholds to diagnose subclinical mastitis in small ruminants produces many false positives.
- California Mastitis Test (CMT) is still useful as a screening tool at the half-udder level, but positive results require confirmation with a laboratory culture before treatment decisions.
- California Mastitis Test sensitivity is lower in goats due to the naturally higher SCC baseline — a CMT score of 1+ in a goat is not equivalent to a 1+ in a dairy cow.
Common Mastitis Pathogens in Dairy Sheep and Goats
Contagious pathogens (spread primarily through the milking process):
- Staphylococcus aureus — the most significant contagious mastitis pathogen in both sheep and goats, similar to its role in cattle
- Mycoplasma agalactiae (sheep) and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (goats) — causes severe clinical mastitis with sudden production loss; peracute cases can be fatal; no effective treatment
Environmental pathogens (from bedding and environment):
- Coagulase-negative Staphylococci — common opportunists, often self-curing
- Streptococcus species — less common than in cattle
- E. coli and other coliforms — associated with clinical mastitis in periparturient animals
Hygiene Product Selection for Sheep and Goat Operations
The same teat dip chemistry that works in cattle is appropriate for dairy sheep and goats. Key adaptations:
Pre-milking preparation: Vilnus LACO or Vilnus LA applied before milking is especially important in sheep and goat operations where teat sanitation before cluster attachment is sometimes neglected because the animals tolerate milking more quietly. The absence of obvious protest is not evidence the teats are clean.
Post-milking dipping: Vilnus 3000 Active is appropriate for standard sheep and goat operations. Vilnus 5000 Active or Vilnus F50 Active for herds with known S. aureus pressure or in challenging environmental conditions.
Application note for sheep: sheep teat anatomy varies by breed — some breeds have short teats that make dip cup application difficult. Spray application can be more practical in these cases.
