How Robotic Milking Changes the Hygiene Equation
Automatic Milking Systems (AMS) have fundamentally changed the milking model in dairy operations that adopt them. Cows milk voluntarily, on self-directed schedules, with no fixed milking times. This means the hygiene interventions that were scheduled around parlor milking — teat dipping after the milking session, cluster cleaning between animals — now have to be automated and integrated into the robotic unit's operating cycle.
Understanding what changes in hygiene requirements when moving from a conventional parlor to an AMS is essential for selecting the right products and protocols.
Teat Preparation in the Robotic Unit
In a conventional parlor, the operator prepares and checks each teat before attachment. In a robotic system, teat preparation is automated by the robot arm, which brushes, rinses, and dries teats in a pre-attachment cleaning cycle built into the unit's software.
The teat preparation brush and nozzle system must be clean between cows. Many AMS platforms include automated cleaning of the preparation arm between animals. Products used for this must be compatible with the robotic system's materials — brushes, synthetic teat cups, and sensor equipment — and must not leave residues that interfere with the teat end detection and attachment systems.
Post-Milking Teat Dipping in AMS: Automatic Dipping Units
After milking in an AMS, post-milking teat dip must be applied to each cow before she leaves the robot. Automatic teat dipping nozzles or cups built into the robot apply the dip product automatically. This requires products specifically formulated for automatic application equipment:

The milk circuit of a robotic milking unit is cleaned in automated cleaning cycles during the periods when the robot is not milking — typically at preset intervals or overnight. The cleaning cycle runs an alkaline wash and, less frequently, an acid descaling cycle through the circuit.
