Prodin: Iodine-Based Hoof Hygiene Product for Footbath Use
Iodine Chemistry in Hoof Footbaths
Prodin uses iodine-based chemistry for footbath hoof disinfection in dairy cattle. Iodine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active with established efficacy against the bacterial pathogens involved in digital dermatitis (Treponema species) and foot rot. Unlike copper sulfate, which acts primarily as an astringent and bacteriostat, iodine provides direct bactericidal and virucidal activity at low concentrations.
Advantages of an Iodine-Based Approach
Iodine-based footbath products offer several practical advantages for certain operations:
- No soil copper accumulation concern: operations with environmental sensitivity around copper deposition in manure can use iodine-based products without this concern
- Rapid bactericidal action: iodine kills on contact at effective concentrations rather than relying primarily on the astringent hoof-hardening mechanism
- Dilution tracking: iodine solutions change color as they deplete, giving a visual indicator that the solution needs replacement — a practical on-farm monitoring tool that non-colored copper solutions lack
Footbath Management with Prodin
Effective footbath use requires more than the right product. Key management factors:
- Place the bath after a clean water rinse bath so manure load doesn't deplete the iodine before meaningful hoof contact
- Change the solution on a schedule based on cow traffic (number of passes) rather than time alone
- Maintain bath depth sufficient to ensure immersion of the hoof and lower claw to the coronary band level
- Record foot bath changes and any digital dermatitis scoring data to track program effectiveness
Fitting Prodin into the Hoof Hygiene Range
AgroLyne's hoof hygiene portfolio covers multiple active chemistries so distributors and importing buyers can match product to local regulatory status and buyer preference. Pescande provides copper sulfate-based footbath chemistry, Anderma Hoof Liquid offers topical spray and footbath use, and N421 covers an additional formulation option.
