Alkaline Cleaning in the Milking Circuit

MS CLEAN is an alkaline, high-chlorine milking system cleaner designed for the removal of organic soil from milking pipelines, receivers, clusters, and cooling tanks. Alkaline cleaners address the organic fraction of milking residues: fat, protein, and milk sugars that accumulate on metal and rubber surfaces with each milking cycle.

Left unremoved, these organic deposits form a substrate for biofilm establishment. Biofilms in milking circuits harbor mastitis-relevant bacteria and are orders of magnitude harder to eliminate than planktonic bacteria in solution. Consistent alkaline cleaning after every milking session prevents biofilm establishment rather than managing an established problem.

Chlorine as the Active Cleaning Component

The high-chlorine formulation in MS CLEAN contributes both cleaning and sanitization functions. Chlorine (as hypochlorite) at the concentrations used in CIP (clean-in-place) milking circuits:

• Disrupts bacterial cell walls and oxidizes organic residues
• Accelerates the breakdown and removal of milk protein soils
• Provides residual sanitization of circuit surfaces after the cleaning cycle

The alkaline base (sodium hydroxide or equivalent) saponifies fats, breaking them into water-soluble forms that are flushed from the circuit during the wash cycle.

Use Protocol

MS CLEAN is used in the alkaline wash cycle, typically at 0.3–0.5% use concentration in hot water (above 65°C at the start of the cycle to ensure effective fat removal). Most milking system cleaning protocols call for an alkaline wash after every milking session and an acid descale cycle every one to three days.

The acid descale counterpart for the MS range is MS CID, a phosphoric or similar acid-based descaler for mineral and milkstone removal. Running MS CLEAN and MS CID in rotation provides complete coverage of both organic and mineral soil types.

MS CLEAN is suitable for:

• Large commercial dairies with automated CIP systems
• Plate cooler and bulk tank cleaning
