The Dairy Milking Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide for Commercial Operations

Why Milking Routine Consistency Matters

Dairy cows are creatures of routine. The milking process triggers a hormonal cascade — oxytocin release causes milk letdown, making milk available for machine extraction. This process works optimally when the stimulation is consistent: same sequence, same timing, same environment, every milking.

Beyond the physiological aspect, a consistent milking routine is also the hygiene system. Every step in the routine has a hygiene function, and omitting or rushing steps creates the gaps through which mastitis pathogens enter.

The Milking Routine: Step by Step

1. Pre-milking pen preparation

Cows should not be standing in deep manure or wet conditions immediately before milking. Clean, dry laneways reduce the bacterial contamination load that cows bring into the parlor on their legs and udder hair.

2. Udder and teat inspection

Before applying any product, look at the udder. Swollen quarters, visible lesions, or discharge indicate a cow that should be milked last and flagged for veterinary attention.

3. Pre-milking teat dip

Apply Vilnus LACO or Vilnus LA to each teat, covering the full teat surface. Allow 30–60 seconds contact time.

4. Wipe and dry each teat

Use a clean, individual cloth per cow (or single-use paper towel). Wipe from the teat end downward, removing the pre-dip product and the bacteria it has killed along with the surface contamination. The teat must be dry before the cluster is attached.

5. Forestripping

Strip 2–3 streams from each teat into a forestrip cup. This stimulates letdown, provides additional visual check of milk condition, and removes the highest-bacteria first-drawn milk from the teat canal.

6. Cluster attachment

Attach within 60–90 seconds of teat stimulation (pre-dip + forestrip) for optimal milk letdown response.

7. Between-animal cluster disinfection

After removing the cluster from one cow: spray xxO Flush PA 5 onto the liner interior and cluster head. Allow contact time. Attach to next cow.

8. Post-milking teat dip

Immediately after removing the cluster, apply Vilnus 5000 Active covering the full teat and teat end. Do not rinse.

9. End-of-milking circuit cleaning

Alkaline wash with MS CLEAN while circuits are still warm. Acid descale with MS CID every 1–2 days.
