Milking Order and Hygiene: Why the Sequence Matters for Mastitis Control
Why Milking Order Is a Biosecurity Decision
In a conventional parlor milking system, the order in which cows enter the parlor and are milked is often determined by habit, cow behavior, or pen management logistics. From a mastitis biosecurity perspective, milking order is a management decision with real consequences for disease transmission.
Contagious mastitis pathogens — particularly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae — spread from infected cows to uninfected cows primarily through the milking process. A cow with an active S. aureus infection in one quarter deposits bacteria on the cluster liner during milking. If that cluster is attached to the next cow without between-animal disinfection, bacteria are transferred to the next teat end.
In a 100-cow herd where 10 cows have S. aureus subclinical mastitis and these animals are distributed randomly through the milking sequence, every uninfected cow that follows an infected cow in the sequence faces a transmission risk.
Milking Order Management for Mastitis Control
The traditional recommendation for herds with contagious mastitis is to milk cows in a health-status-defined order:
- First-lactation heifers: freshly calved heifers have no prior mastitis exposure history and are the most valuable to protect from new infections
- Low-SCC cows: healthy, low-SCC animals
- Known high-SCC or suspect cows
- Known clinical or chronic mastitis cows: milked last, their bacteria are not transferred through the cluster to the animals that follow them
This approach reduces transmission risk because infected cows are milked after all uninfected cows, not before them.
Between-Animal Cluster Disinfection as the Practical Alternative
Managing a strict milking order in a large herd milked through a rotary parlor or a herringbone with fixed entry positions is operationally difficult. The more practical solution for most commercial operations is between-animal cluster disinfection that makes milking order irrelevant:

Between-animal disinfection is the primary practical tool and does not require reorganizing pen management. Milking order management is an additional measure for herds with significant S. aureus challenges where every transmission opportunity should be minimized.
