Milking Equipment Hygiene: A Practical Guide for Dairy Operations
Equipment Hygiene in the Mastitis Prevention System
Mastitis prevention programs focus heavily on teat hygiene — pre-dipping, post-dipping, and teat scoring. Equipment hygiene receives less attention but contributes to both mastitis transmission and milk quality in ways that are easy to overlook.
The milking cluster is not a sterile instrument. It contacts the teat end of every cow in the herd, creates a suction environment that can draw bacteria toward the teat canal, and provides warm, moist conditions that bacteria can colonize between milkings. A cluster management approach that overlooks these risks will leave gaps in the mastitis prevention system regardless of how well teat hygiene is managed.
Between-Animal Cluster Disinfection
Between-animal cluster disinfection addresses contagious mastitis transmission directly. After the cluster is removed from one cow and before it is attached to the next, the liner interior and cluster head are disinfected with a fast-acting, no-rinse product.
The standard chemistries for this application are peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide:
- xxO Flush PA 5: 5% peracetic acid for spray or flush application between animals
- xxO Flush HP 50: 50% hydrogen peroxide concentrate, diluted for between-animal use
Application equipment options include the Pera Spray dedicated between-animal spray unit. These products achieve rapid kill of the bacteria most relevant to contagious mastitis transmission (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae) with no rinsing required before the next cow.
Milking Liner Care
Liners are the component with direct, repeated teat contact in every milking. They deteriorate through mechanical fatigue, chemical exposure, and colonization of micro-cracks by bacteria.
Key liner hygiene practices:
- Replace on schedule: rubber liners develop invisible micro-cracks that harbor bacteria by approximately 2,500 milkings (or the manufacturer's specified replacement interval). Using liners beyond this point compromises both hygiene and milking performance.
- Inspect regularly: visible cracking, discoloration, distortion, or odor are signs of liner degradation
- Clean thoroughly: liner cleaning is part of the cluster and milk circuit CIP cycle; ensure liners are included in the alkaline and acid cleaning cycles
Milking Circuit End-of-Milking Cleaning

Backing Equipment into the Milk Quality Picture
Somatic cell count (SCC) and total bacterial count (TBC) in bulk milk are both influenced by equipment hygiene. A sudden rise in TBC without a change in herd health status often points to a cleaning failure in the milk circuit rather than an animal health event.
