Iraq's Dairy Sector: Traditional and Commercial in Transition

Iraq's livestock and dairy sector sits at a transition point between traditional production systems and commercial farming. Species Composition

Iraq's dairy production comes from two primary species:

River buffalo: Concentrated in the Mesopotamian marshlands of southern Iraq. The traditional buffalo dairy system provides milk and gaymer (clotted cream) for local consumption and urban markets. Buffalo population has been under pressure from urbanization, drainage changes, and environmental degradation in the marshlands, but remains an important component of Iraq's dairy output.

Geographic Distribution of Commercial Dairy

Commercial-scale dairy operations requiring professional hygiene products are concentrated in:

• Kurdistan Region (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Dohuk): most organized commercial dairy zone, with established private farms, investment in genetics and equipment, and functioning supply chains for agricultural inputs
• Baghdad peri-urban zone: large and growing population centers create significant fresh milk demand; several commercial dairy farms in the Baghdad belt supply local fresh milk
• Nineveh and Salahuddin governorates: agricultural zones with traditional cattle keeping, moving toward commercial production

Market Access via Turkey

Iraq is Turkey's largest export destination for agricultural products by value in the Middle East.
