Buffalo and Cattle Milking Hygiene in Iraq: Differences and Product Needs

·2 min read

Dairy Buffalo in Iraq

Iraq has a substantial river buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) population, particularly in the Mesopotamian marshlands of southern Iraq (the provinces of Dhi Qar, Maysan, and Basra) and along the Tigris and Euphrates floodplains. The Iraqi Murrah and Aza breed types are traditional dairy animals that have been kept in Iraq for centuries.

Buffalo milk has higher fat and protein content than Holstein cow milk and commands a premium price in Iraqi markets for fresh consumption and for the production of traditional products (gaymer cream, a type of clotted buffalo cream, is particularly valued). Small-scale and traditional buffalo dairy producers in the marshlands use minimal hygiene protocols, but larger commercial buffalo operations in peri-urban settings increasingly use professional milking hygiene programs.

Anatomical and Physiological Differences Affecting Hygiene

Buffalo teats differ from cattle teats in several ways that affect teat dip product selection and application:

  • Teat canal characteristics: buffalo teats tend to have a tighter teat canal sphincter than Holstein cattle, which may provide some natural protection against ascending infection but does not eliminate mastitis risk
  • Teat skin texture: buffalo teat skin is generally thicker and less prone to cracking than Holstein teat skin in cold conditions, but still benefits from teat dip emollient components in hot, dry conditions
  • Milking frequency: traditional buffalo herds are often milked once daily; commercial operations that move to twice-daily milking increase the importance of post-milking teat protection

Product Selection for Buffalo

The same teat dip actives effective in cattle — iodine, lactic acid, chlorhexidine — are effective for buffalo. Product selection follows the same logic as for cattle:

  • Pre-milking: Vilnus LACO or Vilnus LA for teat surface preparation
  • Post-milking: Vilnus 5000 Active for operations with mastitis challenge; Vilnus F50 Active for film-forming protection between milkings
  • Between-animal cluster disinfection: xxO Flush PA 5 for between-animal cluster head disinfection to prevent contagious mastitis spread in a milking herd

Mixed Buffalo and Cattle Operations

Some Iraqi dairy operations milk both cattle and buffalo in the same facility. Milking these species on the same cluster in sequence without between-animal disinfection creates cross-contamination risk. A consistent between-animal disinfection protocol is important in mixed-species operations.
