Active Iodine Concentration in Teat Dips
Post-milking teat dips contain iodine as the primary bactericidal active. The "active iodine" concentration — the fraction of total iodine available to kill bacteria — is expressed in parts per million (ppm) in most formulations. Two concentrations dominate: 3,000 ppm and 5,000 ppm active iodine.
Both are used for post-milking teat disinfection, but they differ in the balance they strike between bactericidal kill, teat condition effects, and tissue compatibility.
3000 ppm Active Iodine
At 3,000 ppm active iodine, post-milking teat dip products provide effective kill of the major contagious mastitis pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae) and environmental mastitis pathogens (Escherichia coli, Streptococcus uberis) at the teat end.
Vilnus 3000 Active is formulated at this concentration. It is paired with emollient and conditioning additives that support teat skin health with repeated twice-daily applications — a key consideration for maintaining teat condition over the lactation.

5000 ppm Active Iodine
At 5,000 ppm active iodine, the bactericidal margin is increased, providing faster kill and a longer residual activity window on the teat end. This higher-concentration formulation is particularly relevant in situations with elevated mastitis challenge or where environmental bacteria in the housing are placing heavy challenge on teat ends after milking.
Vilnus 5000 Active provides this concentration. Emollient content in the formulation is still important at this concentration to offset the potentially drying effects of higher iodine levels.
Where 5000 ppm suits best:
- Herds with active environmental mastitis pressure (coliform, Streptococcus uberis)
- Operations with challenging housing hygiene or wet season lameness/skin maceration periods
- Farms implementing a mastitis reduction program where maximum bactericidal activity is the priority
Film-Forming Teat Dips as the Third Option
Beyond concentration, the format of the teat dip also matters. Vilnus F50 Active and Vilnus F25 Active are film-forming iodine teat dips — they deposit a physical barrier film on the teat end in addition to iodine chemistry, extending the protective window between milkings. For operations where teat end challenge in housing is the primary risk factor, a film-forming product can outperform a higher-concentration conventional dip.
