How often should dairy cattle pass through an active footbath? The answer depends on whether you are preventing digital dermatitis in a low-prevalence herd or controlling an active outbreak in a high-prevalence herd.

Routine Prevention: Two to Three Times per Week

For herds without active digital dermatitis or with low lameness prevalence (less than 10% of the herd at locomotion score 3+), a footbath 2–3 times per week is the standard recommendation. This means cows pass through the active chemical bath after 2 or 3 milkings per week out of the approximately 14 milkings per week (twice daily).

Placement of the footbath at the parlor exit means all cows pass through automatically at each treatment milking without additional handling.

Active Digital Dermatitis Outbreak: Daily for Two to Three Weeks

When digital dermatitis is actively spreading in the herd — visible as a sudden increase in locomotion score 3–4 cows and identification of M2 lesions at the parlor or hoof trimming — increase footbath frequency to daily. Run the active footbath for every milking for 2–3 weeks, then return to the maintenance frequency.

Daily footbathing during an active outbreak significantly reduces the proportion of active (M2) lesions and slows transmission to unaffected animals.

Solution Management: The Most Overlooked Variable

The most common footbath management failure is not frequency — it is solution longevity. A footbath solution that has been used for 300+ cow passes without changing, or that is visibly contaminated with manure, is a footbath in name only. The active ingredient concentration has been depleted or inactivated, and the bath may be spreading bacteria rather than controlling them.

Practical guidance:

• Change solution after a maximum of 200–300 cow passes, not on a fixed time basis
• Check solution visually before each milking — if it is heavily contaminated (dark color, visible manure), change it regardless of how many passes it has handled
• Never add fresh product to old solution — dilution with used solution reduces efficacy; discard and replace completely
