Film-Forming vs Standard Post-Milking Teat Dips: When to Use Each
Two Technologies, One Purpose
Post-milking teat dips serve the same fundamental purpose: to disinfect the teat end after the milking unit is removed and protect the open teat canal during the vulnerable period before the teat sphincter closes. The difference between film-forming and standard dips lies in how they achieve and sustain that protection.
Standard Dips: Rapid Kill, Shorter Duration
Standard post-milking dips — including iodine-based products like the Vilnus F-series and lactic acid-based products like Vilnus LA DP — deliver their active ingredient in a liquid carrier that coats the teat and begins to evaporate shortly after application. The active ingredient achieves rapid bactericidal activity within the first few minutes.
The limitation of standard dips is duration: as the liquid carrier evaporates, the active concentration at the teat surface diminishes. In high-pathogen environments — particularly summer heat, wet housing, or high-traffic areas — the window of protection may be shorter than the inter-milking interval.
Film-Forming Dips: Extended Physical Barrier
Film-forming products like Vilnus Shield-IO and Vilnus Shield-Phyto use polymer or porphyrin-based chemistries that form a thin, adherent layer as the carrier evaporates. This film:
- Provides ongoing physical protection at the teat canal opening
- Extends the residence time of active components on the teat surface
- Reduces evaporative water loss from the teat skin
The protective film typically persists for 3 to 8 hours, covering a full twice-a-day inter-milking interval under normal conditions.
When to Choose Film-Forming
Film-forming dips are the better choice when:
- Environmental mastitis pressure is high: wet, mucky housing conditions or overcrowding
- Milking interval is extended: 12+ hours between milkings, or robotic operations with variable visit intervals
- Climate is warm: high ambient temperatures accelerate evaporation of standard dips
- Fly challenge is significant: Shield-Phyto adds natural fly-repellent activity alongside the film
When to Choose Standard Dips
Standard dips are appropriate when:
- Mastitis challenge is low to moderate and well-controlled by hygiene management
- Cost per application is a primary consideration — standard dips are typically lower cost per liter than film-forming formulations
- Very rapid bactericidal action is the primary objective
Can You Use Both?
Yes. Some operations use standard dips year-round and switch to film-forming products during peak challenge periods (summer, freshening season, winter housing stress) as a targeted intervention rather than a permanent protocol change.
