Teat Hygiene at Dry-Off: Protecting the Udder During the Dry Period
The Dry Period as a Critical Mastitis Risk Window
The dry period — the non-lactating phase of a dairy cow's production cycle, typically 45–60 days before calving — is both a risk period and an opportunity for udder health management. Risk because the teat canal is potentially more vulnerable to new infection in the first 2–3 weeks after dry-off (before the keratin plug forms) and in the last 2–3 weeks before calving (as the plug dissolves in preparation for milk letdown). Opportunity because this is when existing infections can be treated with dry cow therapy and when new infection prevention can be optimized.
Teat Hygiene at the Point of Dry-Off
The last milking before dry-off is the most important moment for teat hygiene in the dry period. After the last milking:
- Dry cow antibiotic therapy (where used) and/or internal teat sealants are infused into the teat canal
- A post-milking teat dip with higher iodine concentration — Vilnus 5000 Active — is applied to all four teats to reduce bacterial load at the teat end at the start of the dry period
Some farms follow the dip with an external teat sealant product applied over the teat end to physically block the teat orifice during the early dry period while the natural keratin plug is forming.
Maintaining Teat Condition Through the Dry Period
During the dry period, cows are not milked — but they are exposed to bedding pathogens, particularly in the weeks before calving when the udder is filling with colostrum and the teat canal is reopening. Management practices that maintain clean, dry bedding (particularly in the close-up area) reduce the bacterial challenge during this window.
In housed dry cows, teat condition can deteriorate without the daily teat skin exposure to dip emollients. Some farms apply a teat conditioning product (emollient spray or cream) to dry cows' teat ends during the close-up period to maintain teat skin integrity before calving.
Connection to Post-Calving Mastitis
Mastitis in the first 30 days of lactation is frequently infected during the dry period — either an existing undetected infection that persists through dry-off, or a new infection acquired during the at-risk period just before calving. A high rate of early-lactation mastitis is therefore often a dry period management problem.
