Do Different Breeds Need Different Hygiene Products?
The core teat hygiene products — pre-milking dips, post-milking dips, milking system cleaners — are not breed-specific. The same iodine or lactic acid chemistry that works for Holstein cows works for Montbéliarde, Brown Swiss, or indigenous local breeds. Active ingredients don't discriminate.
However, breed differences in teat anatomy, milk production physiology, mastitis susceptibility, and management context do influence how hygiene programs should be designed and emphasized.
Holstein Friesian: High Production, High Challenge
Holsteins are the dominant breed in commercial dairy operations across AgroLyne target markets that have invested in high-producing genetics. They produce more milk per cow than most other breeds, but this comes with characteristics that influence mastitis risk:
- High milk production volume: the mammary gland in a high-producing Holstein is working at near-maximum capacity. The physiological stress of high production can reduce local mammary immune function, particularly in early lactation.
- Teat anatomy: Holstein teat end scores 3 and 4 are common in high-producing herds, particularly where milking equipment is not optimally calibrated. Post-milking dips with high emollient content support teat skin condition.
- Increased susceptibility to environmental mastitis: high-producing cows have larger teat canal openings post-milking, increasing the window for bacterial entry.
For Holstein herds, prioritize: Vilnus 5000 Active or Vilnus F50 Active for summer/challenge periods; emollient-rich pre-dip (Vilnus LA) for teat condition maintenance.
Local and Indigenous Breeds
Traditional dairy breeds and crossbreeds in AgroLyne target markets (Montbéliarde and Simmental crosses in Algeria; Baladi cattle in Iraq; Karabakh cattle in Azerbaijan; Karakul sheep milk in Uzbekistan) typically have lower milk yields and may also have lower mastitis incidence under traditional management.
However, when these breeds are moved from extensive to intensive management — housed in free-stall barns, milked by machine, fed high-energy diets — their mastitis susceptibility in that new environment can increase. A hygiene program appropriate for their new management context is more important than their genetic background.
