Colostrum Hygiene: Why Clean Collection and Storage Matters for Calf Health

Colostrum and Passive Immunity

Calves are born with essentially no circulating immunoglobulins — they receive no antibodies via the placenta. Their entire initial immune defense against infectious disease comes from absorbing immunoglobulins (IgG) from colostrum in the first 24 hours of life. This process, called passive transfer of immunity, is the most important single health event in a calf's life.

If a calf receives inadequate immunoglobulins — either because the colostrum quality is poor, the volume is insufficient, the timing is too late, or the colostrum is too contaminated — the calf becomes an immunologically naive animal facing a world full of pathogens with essentially no protection. This is the origin of many early-life calf disease events.

How Bacterial Contamination Affects Colostrum Efficacy

Bacterial contamination of colostrum reduces its protective value in two ways:

Direct competition: bacteria in the colostrum compete with IgG for gut receptor binding sites. A heavily contaminated colostrum leads to less IgG absorbed even if the IgG concentration is adequate.

Gut damage: pathogenic bacteria can cause gut inflammation that closes the gut to IgG absorption earlier than it would otherwise close, reducing the window for passive transfer.

Colostrum bacterial count targets for feeding to calves: total plate count below 100,000 cfu/mL, total coliform count below 10,000 cfu/mL. These targets require clean collection equipment and, if colostrum is stored, proper chilling.

Clean Colostrum Collection Protocol

  1. Teat hygiene before collection: clean the cow's udder and teats before hand or machine expression of colostrum. The same pre-milking teat preparation principles apply — the goal is to prevent skin and environment bacteria from contaminating the colostrum during collection.

  2. Clean collection equipment: the bucket, funnel, or portable milking unit used to collect colostrum must be clean. Wash with hot water and appropriate cleaner (same products as milking circuit cleaning). Rinse well.

  3. Between-animal disinfection: if using portable milking equipment on multiple fresh cows, disinfect between cows using xxO Flush PA 5 to prevent cross-contamination.

  4. Storage: if not feeding immediately, refrigerate colostrum at below 4°C and use within 24 hours. Alternatively, freeze colostrum in clearly labeled bags for longer-term storage.

Calf Feeding Equipment Hygiene

Bottles, tubes, and esophageal feeders used to deliver colostrum to calves must be cleaned and disinfected between uses. DIO A+B or N421 diluted per label directions provides effective disinfection of plastic calf feeding equipment.
