Coliform Mastitis: The Environmental Challenge
Coliform mastitis is caused by gram-negative bacteria from the environment — primarily Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter species. These bacteria live in the cow's environment: bedding (especially organic bedding like straw or sawdust), manure, water puddles, and soil.
Unlike contagious mastitis pathogens that spread from cow to cow through the milking process, coliform bacteria don't need the milking cluster to transfer — they are already in the environment surrounding every cow. Infection occurs when bacteria from the environment colonize the teat end and enter the teat canal, typically in the post-milking period when the teat canal is still open.
Why Coliform Mastitis Peaks in Summer
Several factors drive the summer peak in coliform mastitis:
Faster bacterial multiplication in warm bedding: E. coli counts in bedding double every 20–30 minutes at temperatures above 25°C. The same bedding that carries 1,000 cfu/mL of coliform bacteria in winter may carry over 1 million cfu/mL in summer heat — a 1,000-fold increase in teat end challenge.
Heat stress-induced immune suppression: mammary immune function is reduced in heat-stressed cows, meaning the immune system is less able to clear bacteria that do enter the teat canal.
Water management challenges: heat drives cows to drink more and spend more time near water sources. Water troughs and wet areas around them create additional coliform bacterial challenge.
Prevention Strategies for the Summer Coliform Challenge
Post-milking protection is the most direct intervention:
The post-milking period (20–30 minutes after milking when the teat canal is open) is when environmental bacteria enter. Post-milking teat dipping with Vilnus 5000 Active kills bacteria at the teat end before they can enter the canal. For operations with the highest environmental challenge, Vilnus F50 Active provides a film-forming barrier at the teat end that extends protection beyond the initial kill.
Bedding management:
Increase bedding change frequency in summer. Target the sand or inorganic bedding materials that don't support bacterial growth as well as organic alternatives. Move to twice-daily (or more frequent) stall cleaning in summer if possible.
Pre-milking preparation: Vilnus LACO applied and wiped before milking removes accumulated environmental bacteria from the teat surface.
