Clean Then Disinfect: Why Sequence Matters in Farm Hygiene
The Most Common Disinfection Mistake
Walk onto almost any livestock farm where a disease event has occurred, and the typical response is to spray disinfectant on the affected pen. The disinfectant is applied to surfaces still covered with manure, bedding, mud, and organic residue.
The result: the disinfectant contacts the organic material and is inactivated before it can reach bacterial cells in or under that layer. The pen looks treated. It is not effectively disinfected.
This is the most common biosecurity failure on farms across every livestock sector. The fix is simple: clean before you disinfect.
How Organic Matter Inactivates Disinfectants
Disinfectant actives work by chemical reaction with bacterial cells. But those same chemical reactions also occur with organic molecules in manure, blood, milk, and soil — and organic matter is present in vastly greater quantity than bacteria on a dirty surface. The disinfectant is consumed by its reaction with the organic load before a lethal concentration can reach the bacteria you are trying to kill.
Different actives have different sensitivity to organic inactivation:
- Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs): highly sensitive to organic inactivation — rendered almost ineffective by significant organic load
- Iodine compounds: moderately sensitive to organic inactivation; reduced efficacy in dirty conditions
- Glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde compounds: better tolerance of organic matter but still more effective on clean surfaces
- Chlorine/hypochlorite: rapidly inactivated by organic matter and also by hard water and sunlight
The Correct Sequence
Step 1 — Remove gross contamination physically: scrape, shovel, or brush off solid manure, bedding, and debris. Dispose appropriately.
Step 2 — Wash with water (and detergent/cleaner if needed): high-pressure water washing removes the adhered organic layer. For surfaces with significant fat or protein contamination (milk rooms, parlor floors), an alkaline cleaner (MS CLEAN diluted per label) aids removal.
Step 3 — Allow to drain and dry: a wet surface dilutes the disinfectant. Dry surfaces allow full-concentration product contact.
Step 4 — Apply disinfectant at the correct concentration: DIO A+B, G380, G378, or N421 applied at label concentration on a clean surface provides effective disinfection.
Step 5 — Allow contact time: disinfection requires contact time. Do not rinse or re-introduce animals before the contact time on the product label has elapsed.
