Milking Hygiene for Dairy Buffalo: Special Considerations
Dairy Buffalo: A Distinct Production Context
River buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) dairy production is significant in several AgroLyne target markets — Iraq (particularly southern Iraq and the Mesopotamian marshlands) and Azerbaijan (traditional buffalo keeping in some highland communities). Buffalo milk commands a premium over cattle milk in local markets for its higher fat and protein content, and traditional products (buffalo cream, mozzarella analogs, fresh cheese) are valued regional foods.
The hygiene principles for buffalo milking follow the same logic as for dairy cattle — teat end protection, milking equipment cleanliness, between-animal disinfection — but there are enough biological and management differences to warrant specific guidance.
Teat Anatomy Differences
Buffalo teats tend to have a smaller teat canal orifice than Holstein cattle, which provides some natural resistance to ascending bacterial infection. However, this does not eliminate mastitis risk. Buffalo udder quarters show the same susceptibility to contagious and environmental mastitis as cattle quarters when milking equipment and hygiene practices allow bacterial transmission.
A tighter teat orifice also means that teat cup liner fit must be matched appropriately for buffalo teat dimensions — liners designed for Holstein cattle may not provide optimal vacuum dynamics on buffalo teats.
Mastitis Pathogens in Buffalo
The bacterial species causing mastitis in buffalo overlap significantly with cattle. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and coliforms are all identified in buffalo mastitis. The same hygiene interventions that address these pathogens in cattle dairy — post-milking teat dipping, between-animal cluster disinfection, milking system cleaning — apply to buffalo milking.
Product Application for Buffalo

Post-milking: Vilnus 5000 Active for post-milking teat end protection. Buffalo teats hold dip well given their skin texture.
Between-animal cluster: xxO Flush PA 5 for cluster head disinfection in herds where contagious mastitis is a concern.
Milking circuit: MS CLEAN after every milking — buffalo milk has higher fat content than cattle milk, which means more fat soil in the circuit and a greater need for effective alkaline cleaning.
