Importing Dairy Hygiene Products into Azerbaijan: Practical Guide

Regulatory Framework for Veterinary Product Imports in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's veterinary product regulatory authority is the State Veterinary Service under the Ministry of Agriculture. Veterinary medicinal products require registration with the State Veterinary Service before commercial sale in Azerbaijan. This applies to products that make therapeutic or prophylactic claims in relation to animals — which includes antimicrobial teat dips.

Products classified as biocides or general cleaning products (such as milking machine cleaners making no claims on animal tissue) may follow a different regulatory pathway, often under chemical product import regulations rather than veterinary medicinal regulations.

Practical note: Azerbaijan's regulatory implementation can vary. Buyers are advised to work with a local customs consultant to clarify the current registration requirements for specific product types before the first import order.

Transport Routes from Turkey

Several logistics routes connect Turkey to Azerbaijan:

Via Georgia (overland): trucks cross the Turkish-Georgian border at Sarpi or Posof, transit Georgia, and enter Azerbaijan at the Red Bridge (Kırmızı Körpü) or Astara crossings. This is the most direct overland route.

Via Nakhchivan: an overland route through Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan's exclave bordering Turkey and Iran) is available for shipments that can clear the Nakhchivan transit. This route bypasses Georgian transit but involves different border procedures.

Caspian Sea shipping: for larger volumes or when overland routes are disrupted, cargo can be shipped from Turkish ports to Baku's Alyat Port via a sea-river route (Caspian ferry or via the Volga-Don canal) — a longer and more complex route used mainly for bulk cargo.

For most commercial shipments of livestock hygiene products, overland via Georgia is the practical standard.
